Don’t Stop The Music
Series | 2018 | ABCThe science is in – children who play a musical instrument do better academically and socially. But most Australian kids are missing out on this vital part of their education.
At Challis Community Primary School, in a disadvantaged suburb of Perth, Principal Lee Musumeci wants to introduce a state of the art singing and instrument program that she hopes will level the playing field. But the obstacles are huge.
Challis, like most public schools, has few instruments and virtually no money. Aided by some of Australia’s top musical educators and music superstars Guy Sebastian and James Morrison, the power of music begins to infiltrate the school. The climax is an inspirational concert where the kids are centre stage with Guy, James and other top musicians, and supported by students and teachers from the University of Western Australia Conservatorium of Music and Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
